What is a Smart Key?
A smart key is a wireless key fob that lets you unlock your car and start the engine without physically inserting a key. The car detects the key's signal when it's within range — typically 1-2 metres — and allows push-button starting. You keep it in your pocket or bag the whole time.
Smart keys are now standard on most new cars sold in Australia and increasingly common on vehicles from 2015 onwards. They go by different names depending on the manufacturer:
Toyota — Smart Entry · Honda — Smart Entry · Nissan — Intelligent Key · Mazda — Advanced Keyless Entry · BMW — Comfort Access · Mercedes — KEYLESS-GO · VW/Audi — Kessy
For a full explanation of how they differ from transponder keys see our transponder key guide.

Why Are Smart Keys More Expensive to Replace?
Three reasons smart keys cost more than standard transponder keys:
1. More complex electronics — smart keys contain a battery, antenna, transponder chip and wireless communication module. More components means more to source and program.
2. Advanced programming requirements — smart keys need to be paired with multiple vehicle systems including the immobiliser, body control module and sometimes the instrument cluster. This requires specialist diagnostic equipment.
3. Higher cost key blanks — the physical key fob itself costs more to source than a standard blade key blank.
Smart Key Battery vs Full Replacement
Before spending $300+ on a full smart key replacement, check whether you simply need a new battery. Smart key batteries typically last 2-3 years and a flat battery is one of the most common reasons a smart key stops working.
Signs you need a battery not a replacement:
Key works intermittently or only at very close range · Warning light on dash saying "key battery low" · Key worked fine until recently with no damage · Car starts when you hold the key directly against the start button
A smart key battery costs $5-10 from any supermarket or hardware store. It's a CR2032 or similar coin cell — check your vehicle's manual for the specific type.
If your smart key has stopped working, try replacing the battery first. If it still doesn't work after a fresh battery then you need a full replacement or reprogramming service.
Getting the Best Price on Smart Key Replacement in Sydney
Always get a quote first — tell the specialist your make, model, year and that you need a smart key replacement. Any reputable Sydney specialist will give you a fixed price over the phone.
Don't go to the dealer unless you have to — for virtually all makes the dealer price is 50-100% more than a local specialist for identical work.
Check your insurance — many comprehensive policies cover lost smart keys. The cost can be significant enough that even paying an excess is worthwhile.
Get a spare at the same time — if you're already paying for a smart key replacement, getting a second programmed at the same visit is far cheaper than a separate visit later.
